Greg Williams Insurance · Longview & East Texas

Independent insurance agent vs. captive agent

What is the main difference? An independent agent can compare insurance from multiple companies. A captive agent generally offers one insurer’s products. Both can provide useful advice; the practical difference is the range of companies and policies available through that office.

Greg Williams Insurance is an independent agency in Longview. We help East Texas homeowners compare available coverage, deductibles, exclusions, and prices—and understand what each option asks them to pay out of pocket.

What can an independent agency help you compare?

Options from more than one insurer

If your current policy becomes expensive or no longer fits, we can review alternatives available through our agency. We do not represent every company, and the number of suitable options depends on the home and underwriting.

Coverage alongside the premium

A useful home comparison includes rebuilding limits, roof settlement, deductibles in dollars, liability, and important exclusions. A lower premium may reflect different coverage, but price alone cannot tell you which policy is broader.

Independent and captive agents: a fair comparison

  • Company choice: independent agencies work with multiple insurers; captive agents generally focus on one company. Ask either office which markets it can actually access.
  • Service: both can explain coverage and help with policy questions. Compare responsiveness and how clearly the agent explains tradeoffs.
  • Price: neither model guarantees the lowest cost. Compare actual quotes using the same information, effective dates, limits, deductibles, and payment terms.
  • Claims: an agent can help you understand the process and find the right contact. The insurer evaluates coverage and the claim under the policy.

Questions to ask before choosing an agent

Ask: Which companies did you consider? What changed from my current policy? What deductible would apply to a wind or hail loss? How is my roof settled? Who should I contact when my renewal arrives?

Frequently asked questions

Will an independent agent automatically shop my policy every year?

Ask the agency about its review process. At Greg Williams Insurance, contact us before renewal to request a review and share property or household changes. Do not assume a new comparison or a policy change has occurred without confirmation.

Does an independent agent charge more?

There is no universal price rule. Insurers, products, discounts, payment plans, and any applicable fees can differ. Ask for the total cost and compare equivalent coverage. Independent and captive agents commonly receive insurer commissions; that does not make all quotes identical.

Can I keep the same agency if I change insurers?

Often, if the new insurer and product are available through that agency and you qualify. Confirm servicing arrangements and the effective date before making a change.

Can an agent guarantee that an insurer will pay my claim?

No. Review the insurer’s licensing, complaint information, financial strength information, and policy terms. A rating or a helpful agent cannot guarantee a particular claim outcome.
