Tool Insurance for East Texas Contractors

A stolen toolbox can delay a job even when the truck itself is insured. For contractors moving between Longview, Kilgore, Hallsville, and nearby job sites, a useful insurance review starts with one question: where are your tools covered throughout the workday?

Follow your tools from storage to the job site

Make a simple list of what stays at your shop, rides in a vehicle, or remains on a project overnight. Include handheld tools, rented machinery, trailers, and equipment borrowed from another business. Tell your agent who owns each item and its approximate replacement cost.

Contractors equipment coverage, often part of inland marine insurance, may cover eligible tools and equipment at job sites, in storage, and during transit. Theft and other causes of loss depend on the policy. Travelers explains contractors equipment coverage, including owned, leased, and borrowed equipment; that overview is not a promise that any particular policy applies to your business.

Ask these questions before a loss

  • Is there a separate limit for each tool, and must expensive items be listed individually?

  • How does the policy handle theft from a vehicle or an unattended job site?

  • Are rented or borrowed items included, and for how long?

  • What deductible applies, and how is the value of older equipment determined?

  • Are employee-owned tools covered? What records would a claim require?

For example, an electrician traveling from a Longview shop to a Hallsville project might carry several individually modest tools whose combined value is substantial. This is a planning example, not a customer claim. Review both the largest single item and the total equipment carried at once.

Review the vehicle and the equipment separately

Ask for a separate explanation of protection for the work vehicle, the tools inside it, and materials being installed. Bring your vehicle schedule to a commercial auto insurance review and your equipment list to a contractor insurance review. A policy title alone does not confirm how a particular loss will be handled.

Make the review easier

Keep photos, receipts, serial numbers, rental agreements, and an updated inventory together. Note your overnight storage arrangements and tell your agent when you buy a major piece of equipment. A clear inventory helps you request appropriate limits and document what you own.
