What the three numbers mean

Texas auto liability limits are written as three numbers, for example 100/300/100. The first is the most the policy pays to any one person you injure. The second is the most it pays for all injuries in one accident, no matter how many people are hurt. The third is the most it pays for the other party's property, which in practice means their vehicle. Anything above those numbers is yours to pay, and a judgment can reach your wages, savings and non-homestead property.

Why 30/60/25 is a bad bet for most Longview households

A new pickup runs $50,000 to $80,000, so a single at-fault accident on Loop 281 can exhaust the $25,000 property damage limit before anyone is hurt. One emergency room visit with imaging can pass $30,000. Most households that own a home or have steady income carry 100/300/100 or 250/500/100, and the price difference between minimum limits and 100/300/100 is usually $15 to $40 a month because the first dollars of coverage are the expensive ones, not the last.

How much do higher limits cost?

Going from 30/60/25 to 100/300/100 commonly adds $15 to $40 a month on a clean record in Longview; going from there to 250/500/100 adds less again. Above that, a personal umbrella adds $1,000,000 for roughly $150 to $300 a year and usually requires 250/500 underlying limits. Price ranges are illustrative; your premium depends on the carrier, drivers and vehicles.
